The Ofoodi safe water storage project:

Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right, yet millions of people around the world lack access to this essential resource. Waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea continue to cause significant health challenges in many communities. In response to this critical issue, the OFOODI Safe Water Project was initiated to provide a practical solution for preserving and treating water to ensure it is safe for drinking and cooking.

The project, which is spearheaded by Orienting Food International (OFOODI), is focused on distributing Becky Pots to households in Agu Gbayi Community and surrounding areas in Nigeria. These pots are designed to help households monitor, preserve, and treat their water safely, thereby reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.

The Becky Pot (facilitated by the Ofoodi Safe Water Storage project) is a closed system that uses gravity and slow sand filtration to purify water. The pot is made of clay and has a small tap at the bottom that allows the purified water to be drawn out. The pot is easy to use and maintain, making it a practical solution for households without access to more sophisticated water treatment technologies.

One of the primary goals of the OFOODI Safe Water Project is to encourage a behavior change towards handling drinking water and the environment. The project educates households on the importance of proper water handling, storage, and treatment to ensure water remains safe for consumption. Through this education, households are empowered to take ownership of their water supply, reducing reliance on external sources and contributing to sustainable development in the community.

The project also involves teaching children in the community how to use the Becky Pot, ensuring that the knowledge and skills required for proper water treatment are passed down to the next generation. This approach to involving younger generations in sustainable development is critical to ensuring that communities remain resilient and self-sufficient in the long term.

The OFOODI Safe Water Project is not only contributing to the health and well-being of households in Agu Gbayi Community but is also aligned with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by promoting sustainable nutrition and food security through safe water, SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases, and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by providing access to safe and clean water.

The project is also aligned with SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by empowering households to take ownership of their water supply, reducing reliance on external sources, and contributing to sustainable development in the community.

In conclusion, the OFOODI Safe Water Project is making significant contributions to the health and well-being of households in Agu Gbayi Community by providing access to safe and clean water. By educating households on the importance of proper water handling, storage, and treatment, the project is empowering them to take ownership of their water supply and contribute to sustainable development in the community. The involvement of younger generations in the project is also essential for ensuring the knowledge and skills required for proper water treatment are passed down to the next generation. The project’s alignment with several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals highlights the critical role it plays in contributing to sustainable development and achieving a better and healthier world for all.

To give life a meaning you need to be a solution provider. The Becky Pot was originated as a solution to the community to help keep drinking water safe and preserved.  Mr Musa Tanko is one of the beneficiaries of the OFOODI Safe Water Project.  Before now he didn’t know how to treat his water and keep it safe for his family.  With the introduction of the pot,  he is able to monitor, preserve and treat his water safely, enabling him and his household access to a better health free from cholera, typhoid and other related diseases.
